Chapter 9

“We’ve got to get these pies done before Ethel gets here!” Granny ordered, as the Pie-a-Palooza Committee hustled to put the finishing touches on their latest batch. “She’ll never approve of the lemon meringue. There is no way the pilgrims had access to lemons.”

“Shows what you know, Georgie.” Ethel popped her head into the kitchen. “Ha! Didn’t know I was here, did you?” she added when everyone jumped, startled at her sudden appearance. She walked over to Alice’s grandmother. “Occasionally, the pilgrims took a spoonful of lemon juice—for the prevention of scurvy.” She pressed the button to turn on the light inside one of the ovens and peered in at one of the fantastical lemon pies. She gave a little sniff. “I suppose one could say that eating this pie could be . . . almost medicinal if one were coming over on the Mayflower and deficient in vitamin C.”

“That’s the spirit, Ethel!” said Granny, giving the little woman a slap of approval on the back. “Everyone back to work! The Wishbone Committee is due here shortly, and they’re going to need the ovens for the turkeys. We’ll have to be cleared out by then!”

Everyone focused on their assigned tasks. Alice, Owen, and Franny were on juicing duty, slicing and squeezing lemons for the filling of the last few pies.

“I still can’t believe we got a threatening note,” said Owen.

“Keep your voice down,” Alice warned. “I don’t want Granny to worry.”

“It gives me the willies, big time,” said Franny. “You and your friends better quit sticking your nose in where it doesn’t belong or more blood will be shed,” she said, quoting the letter.

“As if we all share one big nose,” said Owen with a snort. “I mean, just because this person is a criminal, does that mean they have to use bad grammar?”

“Did you give the note to Luke?” asked Franny.

“Yes,” said Alice. “He was none too happy about it.”

“Neither am I. This is getting scary,” said Franny.

“But the person wants us to stop snooping around,” said Owen. “And you know what that means.”

“That we’re on the right track and it’s making them nervous,” said Alice.

“Oh—and I heard some juicy gossip this morning that I’m bursting to tell you,” said Owen in a loud whisper.

“Oh my gosh, so did I!” said Franny. “Just this morning!”

Before either of them could elaborate, the kitchen door swung open and Luke walked in, Ben just a few steps behind him.

“We can smell the pie from the station next door,” said Ben, walking over to the cooling racks where the previous batch had been set out. “Got any free samples?”

“Not until tomorrow,” said Franny, swatting his hand away from the pies.

Alice pulled Luke out of the kitchen and into a quiet corner. Ben, Owen, and Franny followed. “Did you check the note for fingerprints?” asked Alice, looking back and forth between her husband and her brother.

“We did,” said Luke. “There weren’t any.” He put his hands on Alice’s shoulders and leveled his eyes at hers.
